I remember the moment when I thought about the image first. This event occurred when I was 14 years old. I saw an illustration behind the fashion article in a magazine: some Parisian woman was in a classic coat and a scarf, coming out of curl in the wind. “Oh, that’s a real woman!” – I thought then. Long coat, scarf and plume of perfume – that was the perfect image for a long time.
Understanding that image – this is not just an appearance, but also reputation, came to me a bit later – when I was 20. Moreover, there was no particular moment. Just a realization came to me: in order to be successful, it is not enough to have a scarf. In addition, as it often happens in 20, “my life was catastrophically taking shape: neither honoured bachelor’s diploma, nor the presence of fans and the prospects for successful work did not make me happy. Moreover, my image among friends and acquaintances formed not very pleasantly for me at that time: sharp desire to be weak and dependent appeared, while everybody was accustomed to rely on me.
At some point I wanted to break the vicious circle and change everything. Therefore, I caught almost delusional idea of moving to another city. Why delusional? At least because, having studied on a paid department during three years, I finally got scholarship for the masters program. Future looked promising as I had possibility to get masters degree first, PhD then and finally get a fairly good job. And why did I need this move? Well, this was a step into the unknown: to get or not to get work … New people, new friends, new job …
And I have got the success! I began to form a new image from the scratch. After all, in a big city, no one knows who I am and what is capable of. This means that out of the closet you can get a scarf and try to play the role of “real women” from a picture. Did I take offence often and a person could tell when I am dissatisfied? Well, then I would be offended less often and practice to keep a straight face in front of the mirror.
And to make it easier, I have invented a sample: the perfect woman, possessing those traits, which I do not and without those flaws that I have. And every time I found myself in a difficult situation, I imagined how she would have done, what she would have said and done. And I followed her. This made the determination to move forward continually.
Yes, the times when I did not know what the image is, are over. Similarly, as the days are gone, when I believed that the image is just perfume and scarf. But now I can afford to be different. I can the person I wish to be. After all, this is only my decision, but there’s nothing like the image of a mature man.
