Can I make a living from home and can I really get rich overnight?

Yes, You can make a very decent living from home but you will have put the time into learning network marketing and setting it up the right way. No, You won’t get rich overnight.

Is there a miracle system that does all the selling for me and I will never have to talk to anybody?

Yes, when you understand how it works you will see the genious in the system. However what I have discovered is that the these systems are actually set up for you to fail. I learned this the hard way and will show you how to alter them to so that you get 100% of the sales.You will need to call and close people, however if you are with me I will close all your deals for you.

Honestly, do only the people at the top really make a profit?

That all depends on your company’s compensaion plan.The reason that most are so complicated is because they are trying to hide this fact. If you have the right one you can generate significant income from the begining. I have searched high and low for the best opportunity and I believe that I have truly found it. I personally admit that I’ve had a fantastic year in 2010, and I can say that I have accomplished a lot of my goals… Yayyy!! However, as I look back on this past year, there are a few areas that I admit to neglecting (that I never hear anyone talking about)….. and I’ve been feeling the negative impact from them every single day.
So as we prepare to close this year out, and establish our New Years Goals for 2011, I felt the need to write this blog entry because I want to help you avoid the same traps that I fell into this past year, and am now trying to recover from.

The first area that I’ve neglected in a major way by being in the Internet Marketing Industry has been “My Body”.

Considering that we spend countless hours on the computer, and even more sitting on the couch munching on some form of comfort food, I can tell that this Internet Marketing Profession is aging me in more ways than one. Not to be negative or anything, because the home based business is a very wonderful industry. But there are several pro’s and con’s to what we do, and I want to make sure that you’re aware of the con’s that will eat away at your time before you realize what’s happening in your life.

Below, I want to share a few things that will open your eyes before you let things get too far out of control.
I’m going to share what I’ve learned thus far about the dangers of what we do!

Here are the con’s of what we do:

1. We don’t get much exercise – considering that we work from home and our offices are only a few short steps away from the bed, we very seldom get any walking exercise in if we don’t have a regular work out regime.
I personally feel as though I’ve always been “trying” to work out, but tend to fall off after a few short attempts, all to feel like I need to get my butt back in shape again, a few months later. This vicious cycle has led me to being negligent of my body, and as an Internet Marketer, this is signs for major trouble… which leads to my next point:

2. Complications & Stress on our body from sitting at the computer all day – I never really took chiropractors seriously, and honestly, I had a very biased belief that they were rip off artists… UNTIL THIS YEAR!!!
After sitting on my couch for the past two years, with my laptop on my lap and feet propped up on the ottoman, I began to experience major pains in my neck and lower back, with stiffness all over my body. I brushed it off for a while, thinking that maybe I had just slept wrong, until one day I found myself home alone, stuck in one position in my bed, hollering to the top of my lungs because I couldn’t move my body without extreme pain, calling my husband and begging him to drive the 45 minute ride home from work to rescue me.

As corny as “ergonomics” may seem, it is crucial in our industry. And now more than ever, home based business owners need to add stretching and working out to their daily schedules to help release the stress that mounts in certain parts of our bodies as a by-product of the poor positions we put our bodies in while working from home.

3. Munch, Munch, Munch – When working at home, I find myself back and forth to the refrigerator like it’s apart of my work routine. What this does is creates poor eating habits, munching on quick convenience foods that add to weight gain and low energy.
I’m finding that I have to create weekly menu’s that are in sync with a workout routine, that will help to counteract eating out of boredom, and instead, will encourage a more enriching diet.

4. Not having an outlet outside of working on the business – As great as it may sound to be so driven that you’re working 12-18 hour days on your online business in pursuit of being wealthy… what’s the point when you don’t get out to enjoy the journey along the way.
They say that Health & Wealth go hand in hand, but I believe that having an outlet falls under the category of Health. It’s very healthy to find something else to do outside of working so that you can give your mind a break. Burn Out is a very common occurence in our industry and if your not careful, you will find yourself bailing out on what was once your “Dream Job”, due to Extreme Burn Out.

I personally felt this way over the summer and it led me to feelings of failure, questioning what I was doing, and slighlty depressed. Why?? Because I didn’t have any outlets, and all work and no play makes Nic a very very dull girl!

I had come to the realization that in the course of 2 years, I went through emotional challenges from a failing career, to trying to pick up the pieces after losing everything. And also adding “motherhood” to my life, while spending nearly every waking hour on the computer in an attempt to create a flourishing online business. It eventually paid off, but the fire was easily burnt out when things began to thrive because I just didn’t have the mental space any more to really give it 100%. Instead, I found myself desperate for a break, dodging phone calls and trying to avoid people all together.

It was then that I realized that I needed to have more going on in my life, than just focusing EVERYTHING on building a business. It’s way more beneficial to give yourself a break from it all more often, and engage in some kind of outlet that you enjoy, that is totally outside of your “business world”.

I’m now seeking to add some new fun things this upcoming year like bike riding, working out, enrolling into a dance class and more social groups locally, where I can engage in more human interaction…. which leads to my next point:

5. Not having enough human interaction – When I first got started online, I thought this would be the best thing in the world, making money from home and never having to leave your house…..The sad part is, I didn’t realize how literally, my social interaction with people would become non-existent.

Who would ever think that one could lose their social skills by working online. After all, Internet Marketing is hugely about building relationships with people online right??? …..

Well, there’s more to the story than just meeting people. The Full Picture is this, people really do crave human and social interaction, and no matter how many people you meet online, YOU STILL NEED TO GET OUT AND TOUCH, TALK AND INTERACT WITH REAL LIFE HUMAN BEINGS…… Seriously!!
As much as I was meeting ton’s of people online, I was neglecting a real social life “offline”, and became deceptively programmed to believe that my virtual world was enough and all I needed… YEAH RIGHT…
Never before, have I ever felt so lonely in my life. I began to notice that these 4 walls, and this extreme level of isolation was handicapping me AND MY BUSINESS…. You heard me right….if you’re not careful, this industry will totally isolate you, and you will begin to lose touch with reality and people. And this my friend will handicap your business.
Internet Marketing is great to connect with people, but you need to create communities offline to establish a culture where people are proud to be connected to you, making them more loyal to continue to do business with you. No matter how many more Social Media Sites are designed, and applications created, human beings need the human touch, and if your not careful, you will lose your ability to relate to people personally, and eventually will see a decline in your personal growth as a result!
Go join a social group “offline”. Hang out with your girlfriends or male buddies being silly and totally off duty. Join a Dance School, or take that class at the local college you’ve always wanted to take. Join the local gym and meet some new people. If you’re a stay at home mom, connect with local Mommy & Me groups, and GET A LIFE, outside of working.

I’ve noticed that I’ve gone from an Extreme Social Butterfly (before Internet Marketing), to an Introvert (post-Internet Marketing), and I’m having to retrain myself on how to interact with people “offline” again.
In closing, I want to begin to open the eyes to my fellow I.M.’ers to have a well rounded balance to your lives so that you can have a long lasting and exciting career in this industry.

With that said, I’m going to begin incorporating my personal journey for Fitness, Social and Professional growth in the upcoming weeks, and want to encourage you to join me in sharing your story as well.

“They have the best compensation plan ever”….

“Tommy made $2,000 in his first 4 hours”….

“No other company has this”…

“You can be on the ground floor”….

I think we could all agree that we’ve heard it all, and could do away with hearing any of them again. But the truth is that with the economy at an all time low, the home based business industry is on the rise.
Despite the feelings of burn out and disgust with the thought of hosting another home party from veterans (like myself) who’ve been around the block a thousand times, there are over 8,493 new home based businesses opening every single day with eager, hungry, driven, ambitious wanna-be’s who have champagne dreams of making money while on the beaches of the world.

I was once one of them, and I must say that it’s been one hell of a roller coaster ride. But despite my personal experiences, I must say that Network Marketing is the best way to develop short term income to fund your long term dreams, while developing personal development skills that is unparalleled to any other form of education that exists today. The caveat however, is having clear expectations for what your getting yourself into, and who you’re partnering with in the process.

If you overlook this one important step (of doing your due diligence with these 5 important points), you may find that you’re setting yourself up for failure and can be flat out wasting your time.

Yesterday, I sat down with a good friend of mine to discuss what I’ve always looked for in a company despite the hype. I find that most people tend to lead their opening lines about their businesses with “money” as the main focus, but not considering the important factors that exist within the fabric of the company that will guarantee you’ll really earn a solid income AND maintain a peace of mind in the process.

Now more than ever, with the multitude of businesses popping up, you MUST go through this checklist and do your due diligence to ensure that you’re partnering up with the right opportunity AND the right people. Otherwise, you’ll become a bitter soul from your battered experiences due to negligence on your part from not doing your due diligence.

Network Marketing is WORK…. although you are in control of your day and time, you are still going to be working. As a matter of fact, you work longer hours than your day job, but the key is making sure your working them, doing something that you love and with people that you enjoy being around… (listen up to me seriously, cause this makes a HUGE difference. You’ll thank me later for being honest).

Below I have listed 5 things to look for when joining a network marketing business, and I list what you need to look out for to avoid putting your money in a sinking ship.

DO NOT… DO NOT… DO NOT… get caught up in the hype of what people are saying without doing your due diligence. PLEASE!!! (Do you hear me screaming this? Okay, good…glad to know you got it!)

#1. Company Leadership, Values, Integrity & Vision:

The first thing that I pay attention to is who’s driving the boat of this ship.

If you pay any attention to football at all, you will notice that the Cowboys have had a very challenging year during this 2010 season. In the game of football, if the team losses, the coach is fired. After accumulating one of the worst records in Cowboys history of 1-7, the head coach Wade Phillips was instantly given his walking papers due to his inability to lead the team to a winning season.

I find it very ironic that although the team is playing the game, the coach is fired. You would think that all of these high paying athletes who are known to be the best in their profession, would have some level of accountability, but they don’t. The reason why is simply this, a good coach has the ability to bring out the best in his players, and allow them to see who they can become versus who they are. Coaching is like sailing a ship, where the guidance that a coach gives can navigate the direction of the entire team.

Obviously, Phillips continously led the Cowboys into a losing streak. In the game immediately proceeding the release of Phillips, the Cowboys went on to win their 2nd game of the season, beating the NY Giants.
Do you think coaching had anything to do with the win???…………. My point exactly!

And so it is with Network Marketing Companies. Depending on who’s coaching the team of your company, they will determine whether you really win or lose while playing the game of Network Marketing under their leadership.
When I look into a company, I’m looking at the Owner, what his vision is, if he’s authentic or a b.s.’er with canned speeches like a politician, telling the reps what they “want” to hear, and not what they “need” to hear. And if he’s truly passionate about what he does as well. As you know, there’s a lot of money in the ownership of these companies, and if you pay close attention to the ownership, you can sense their hearts and motives for why they’re here.

I’ll give you an example. My good friend shared with me how he was so excited about this new company that he was involved in. He talked about the potential for where it was going to go, the income they could earn, and the fact that the product worked…. all which appeared to be a win-win situation. However, one Sunday night, while hosting the companies corporate call, the owner got on the call and began sharing how he’d been working on a new project. He then went on to say how he was starting up a new company, offering everyone on the call a chance to join now… even giving them the cost to sign up.

OMG… are you freaking kidding me???

BTW, this was a call FOR PROSPECTS…. so potential prospects had to hear all of this too…. Oh Heck No!!
See, this example displays the agenda behind an owner without a heart to build his company… MONEY!! And you might be thinking that they’re all that way. I beg to differ. Some people truly do want to build legacies. Just look at AL Williams (founder of what is now PriMerica), or the owners of solid companies like Pre-Paid Legal or Amway. I am in no way associated with these companies, but it’s very clear that these owners are very adamant about creating long term success, and I doubt that they’re going anywhere any time soon.
So should you join them… that’s not my point…you be the determining factor for what business you choose!
But my point is this, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE LEADERSHIP and you can provide yourself with the “Oh No He Didn’t Guarantee……!!” LOL;)

If the leadership is “BUYING LEADERS” in hopes of building a reputation very fast…. BE CAREFUL!!
If the leadership is allowing select leaders to influence the direction of the entire company…. BE CAREFUL!!
If the leadership compromises integrity in certain areas and make exceptions in certain situations…. BE VERY CAREFUL!!

Ask questions, pay attention and get to a Live Event if possible to scope out the company and the attitudes of the leadership… you’ll learn a lot if you pay attention!!
Trust Me on this…

#2. Upline Leadership

Listen up!! THIS IS HUGE!!!….

This is almost as important as choosing your spouse and understanding their background and what they bring to the table BEFORE having kids with them. Why?? Because you will be spending a lot of time with them, or without them… and if you’re serious about building a large solid organization, you’ll want someone that you’d prefer to spend time with rather than without.

Here’s why I put emphasis on your upline. When I first got started in this industry, I had quite a few influences that were iconic for what leadership was and is, and how to lead a team “the right way”. So when I joined an organization under a group of people that compromised their integrity in every sense of the word, and didn’t want to work with us if we wouldn’t hook and crook with them… I quickly discovered the importance of solid leadership.

Because of being associated with the wrong people, I quickly got burnt out due to being forced to do everything myself. And my team eventually fell apart as a result of attending company events and seeing what other teams had versus what we didn’t, regretting our association and forced guidance by a group of people who didn’t have an interest in providing quality leadership.
Here’s the deal. As I said earlier, Network Marketing is WORK! It is very challenging to build a large organization BY YOURSELF… As a matter of fact, the most miserable part of building a business can be when you’re forced to do it alone, and have to carry the weight of hosting training webinars, phone calls, 3 way calls and whatever else is needed… BY YOURSELF! Burnout is very prevalent in our industry, and this is a huge reason why people eventually walk away, even after earning a great deal of income.

Regardless of how much money you make, it becomes very burdensome when you don’t feel like you have support from your upline.

Now there’s a catch 22 with this that I must address. Some people reading this may think “Oh, Nicole said that my upline should be calling me and should always be there just for me!”. No, I’m not telling you that you need to rely on your upline 100% for building your business, because they have to focus on building as well. But quality leadership from your upline means that THEY PUT SYSTEMS IN PLACE to help the team grow BUT… it also means that YOU MUST BE PLUGGED IN TO THAT SYSTEM AND THAT YOU PLUG YOUR TEAM IN AS WELL!

I would be remissed if I didn’t convey the message that it’s not the leaders job for you to succeed. But it is your job to make sure that you do whatever you can to “earn” the attention from your upline by becoming a “producer” and utilizing the systems that they put in place to ensure your success. Far too many times, I’ve seen this point misconstrued to the demise of upline leaders. However, there is a balance in my message to say that you have to do your part in building your business before expecting your upline leaders to do theirs.

So now you see why I have a huge emphasis on connecting with the right leadership that will help you with the growth of your organization. The company should have “training” as a standard provision for all reps. Your upline leadership is then a 2nd support system that links a system together that provides team wide training and support.

The bottom line is this….you want to be associated with ACTIVE LEADERS who have SYSTEMS in place to help carry the burden of your growth.

#3. Systems

Whewww, this word in itself says it all. If you didn’t know, the acronym for System stands for “Save Your Self Time, Energy & Money”.
Why is a system so important?
Well, let me share my personal experience once again for the lack of a training system when building your business.

In one of my previous companies that I was apart of, I had joined because all the stars aligned and it appeared to be a great company that I could generate a good deal of money from, which I did. Doing what I know best to do when starting any mlm business, I ran as fast as I could in an attempt to build as quickly as possible and as big as possible. However, I never stopped to check and see what kind of systems were in place to help support my growth, and I quickly discovered that there were none. And if there was going to be any type of system, it was up to me to create it.

So here I was with hundreds of people in my downline, anxiously waiting for guidance on how to build their organization and how to plug their prospects in. I immediately had to shift my focus from recruiting to performing administrative tasks like developing a team website, setting up team calls, writing team manuals on what to do to get started, recording training videos, recording training calls, creating recognition platforms, printing certificates, hosting weekly meetings, paying for the hotel rooms for the meetings “by myself” and the list goes on and on and on and on…….

Let’s not even talk about how much all of this cost to get going… and to maintain…..that’s a whole other blog entry!

Obviously, this wasn’t an easy task to perform while people were constantly calling me for 3 ways, directions, guidance, support and everything else that was needed along the way. I couldn’t turn them away, and neither could I hand these tasks off to anyone else. So what did I do??…… I just did it. Thankfully, I did have a few other leaders that stepped up to the plate to begin to help carry the load, but my point here is this, If I would have ensured that these systems were in place before hand, I could of put more emphasis and focus on building my business and simply PLUGGING MY TEAM IN TO
THE SYSTEMS THAT ALREADY EXISTED.

Quick commercial break…….

Let me say this. With me just sharing all the things above that I had to do to set my team up, do not take it for granted when you’re in an organization that already has these things in place. Instead, be grateful and know that you’re under quality leadership from someone that really cared enough to get this going (or a company that had the vision to fulfill this need to benefit their reps). Also, if your failing and you don’t understand why BUT you have systems and quality leadership in place, then maybe you need to re-evaluate the hardest person to influence… YOURSELF….

Anywhoo…didn’t mean to go off on that tangent….

Now back to our regular programming….
Systems and quality training has become a neglected area for many newer companies, and I highly recommend that you dig in ahead of time to see what systems are in place to ensure you and your teams success. Otherwise, without them, you’re leading a trail towards RESPONSIBILITY BURN OUT!! Trust me… I know this challenge first hand!

#4: Compensation Plan

Although it’s not “only about the money”, let’s be honest here and admit that MONEY DOES MATTER!! With all of the compensation plans that exist today, this topic can easily become very overwhelming. Especially for those of us who are comp plan illiterate.
Why?? Cause you have binary, unilevel, weak leg, strong leg, minimum qualification requirements and the list goes on and on.

However, what you can determine is if the potential income earned is worth the time invested.
For example, I’ve seen some comp plans where they pay out a commission of $2 per person that signs up in the business and THAT’S IT!!

Okay, let’s think through this for a minute. Let’s say hypothetically that I go out here and join this Company with an earning of $2 per person. I then go through the same process as I would with any other business of seeking people to recruit them in my company to pay their $100 or whatever it is to join, and then I earn $2.
If I have a goal to generate an extra $2000 per month, I would have to sign up 1,000 people to earn my monthly goal of $2k.

Tell me if I’m wrong here, but that’s just waaaayyyyy too much work and effort to recruit 1,000 people for a measly $2k.

Yes $2k is good money but not to be pestered by 1,000 other people who are frustrated because they’re only earning $2 per person, and putting forth far too much effort to build their organizations.

My point is this, do the math to see if the comp plan is worth your time. At the end of the day, no matter what company your with, they all require the same amount of
time invested to really create a comfortable income.

Keep in mind that you still have to talk to people, you have to expose them to your business via webinars, one-on-ones or live presentations, and once you sign them up, you have to keep them motivated to build.

If your going to have to do all that work anyway, why not do it for a company that really pays….. If you ever heard of Top Tier Companies, they generally become more attractive to experienced Network Marketers because each person recruited results in a much higher earnings, sometimes $1,000 minimum for most companies.
So think about it, review the comp plan and do the math because you can clearly be wasting your time with a company that will never position you to become financially free.

#5: Product

Yes, I intentionally made Product #5 because it is important, but as for priority, it does rank last on the list.

Products do matter, but in the industry of Network Marketing, it’s really about the relationships and the leadership. As they say, “people join people, not opportunities” and I’ve seen some companies that have a product that totally sucks. But because the leaders were great at establishing relationships and creating a culture where people wanted to be apart of whatever it is that they do, the company still grows despite the product.

IMHO….. this is very important. I believe in reputation and I refuse to diminish mine selling sucky products.
When selecting a company, you want to make sure that people are already buying what your selling. On the other hand, you want to make sure that your company has some form of competitive edge over what already exists on the market today to make it more irresistible.

In our in industry, there’s only 2 ways to earn an income:
1. Retail
2. Recruting

And if you want to sustain true residual income, you want to spend a good percentage of your time obtaining retail customers in addition to building an organization because they help to build up the consistent purchases that will pay you monthly. Be sure to properly assess what you have and ask yourself if you would buy it had someone approached you with the same products. If your answer is No, then don’t waste your time.

There’s no need to fool yourself into believing that you can succeed at selling something you don’t believe in.

All your doing is delaying the time before you mentally check out and give up completely on that company. I wouldn’t even bother adding the unnecessary stress of having an upline badgering me about attending events and trainings if I knew I had no interest.

Trust me, in the end you will regret it and you will beat yourself up thinking about all the time you wasted trying to force yourself to want to do this.

Network Marketing is NOT for everybody.

As a matter of fact, there are certain people that shouldn’t even try to engage in this industry and I’ll name a few:

People who prefer a consistent guaranteed check (i.e. getting paid every 2 weeks)

People who don’t like talking to or dealing with people

People that don’t like the idea of having your own business and building it

Extreme Pessimists who always find the negative side of life

Lazy People

I know that when someone is desperate to build their organization, they say anything possible to increase their chances of earning a new recruit. But in the end, it bites all parties involved in the butt when knowing that the new recruit wasn’t a good fit but was forced to join anyway.

Listen up people, Network Marketing is a great tool for financial growth, personal development, relationship building with like-minded people and to gain recognition and discover your personal talents and gifts. But I will repeat this…. IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!

After writing this very very very long blog entry, It is my hope that you do a self-assessment to determine if this is a good fit for you. And if so, review the 5 Most important things that really matter when partnering with a company, and make a wise choice.

The average person goes through 10 jobs in their lifetime and I’m sure that the average Network Marketer goes through 10 companies in their lifetimes as well. However, very few people stick this industry out long enough to succeed due to a negative experience with the wrong company.

So in closing, choose wisely. Be honest with yourself. Make a decision based on what “YOU” really want and not what someone wants for you. And Happy Network Marketing to you!!

The bad part about them failing that is they will then feel justified to go around “trashing” this industry and saying it “doesn’t work” when in reality they are the ones who “don’t work.”

People choose the wrong company.
