This years UC Davis Western Cooling Challenge winner has been and commercial retailers to get new information about the units.

Coolerado won the challenge with their new H-80 commercial rooftop cooling unit, they were announced winners after test results came back regarding the unit. The tests found that the five ton unit uses less than half the energy used by a normal air con unit.

The results of the tests, which were carried out at the US Government’s National Renewable Energy Labratory, actually came as a surprise for many. The director of the UC Davis challenge, Mark Modera, originally believed that the H-80 unit would only save 40% energy compared to standard units. However, the results of the tests found that the massive unit actually uses 80% less power than conventional units.

No doubt with the annoucement of an energy saving air con unit, many companies will be looking to improve their green image by buying one of these units. Air cooling and units are one big thing that many environmental campaigners are against as they are seen as a luxury. Now with this news, the H-80 will become very popular with both the customers and retailers. Although I suspect many customers don’t really consider what’s keeping the store cool and refreshing.

Despite this good news for the air conditioning business, we might see some more soon. Many other companies have also submitted their cooling units, not just Coolerado, however, the results of these tests have not yet been released. We’re going to have to wait to see if the H-80 can be beaten.
