Data Analytics is a very important process and is used by many organisations to analyse data they have in order to recognise any trends or results that can be beneficial. This analysis could highlight departments that are operating effectively, and others that are underperforming so changes can be made and performance can be optimised. If used correctly, data analytics can be a highly valuable tool within any organisation, and could provide business critical results that can give a company a competitive edge. There are many data analytics programs on the market today, and even though they are all different, the majority tend to contain a few key features.
There are three main functions that I think a data analytics program should be able to carry out. The first is collating data. This means the program needs to be able to access one or more data sources, retrieve relevant data and put it all in one place so analysis can be done. One obvious constraint on this process is the number and type of data sources that the program is able to access. Other additional features at this stage can be the use of parameters to make the data collected more relevant, or the use of aggregation to target and reduce the amount of data being retrieved.
This leads on to the second function I think should be present in a data analytics program. This is the analysis section, and there are many features that can assist with analysis. One of them is the ability to add formulas to data across and down a table, which is a key part of analysing raw data. The program may also allow any data being viewed to be filtered so the user only works with data that is relevant to their data analytics. As well as filtering, grouping can allow data to be sorted in to groups, again separating data so relevant information can be easily identified. Finally, data could be graphically represented through charts, which can help with analysis as it can be easier to observe and identify any trends or correlation.
The third main function I think makes up a data analytics program is the way it enables the user to present their findings. This could be done through the use of an in-built report builder within the program so you can easily create a report of any analysis. Alternatively there may be features to quickly produce charts, which can be beneficial in both the analysis and presentation stages. You can then use these presentation tools independently or together in order to produce a report and presentation for a meeting.
