Number one network infrastructure vendor Ericsson has won new deals with the world’s largest mobile operators – China Mobile and China Unicom – worth US$1.8 billion. An US$800 million deal with China Unicom will be considered Ericsson as “ a faster 3G network with HSPA Evolution technology to secure higher speed and better user experience for consumers.” Meanwhile, a framework contract worth US$1 billion with China Mobile sees Ericsson as “ a radio access network including a multi-standard radio base station RBS 6000 and mobile soft-switching technology, which will drastically boost the capacity of the network and evolve it into an IP network.” Ericsson also aims to help China Mobile achieve its energy saving goals. Both operator contracts will be implemented during 2010 and follow previous network deals at the companies.
Ericsson managed to increase its market share to 20.8 percent in 2009 from 18.7 percent, although Chinese rivals Huawei and ZTE closed the gap slightly. Huawei grew its share from 11.5 percent to 14.2 percent, and ZTE increased its share from 4.1 percent to 6.7 percent. The market shares of Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks remained relatively stable in 2009, at 12.7 percent and 11.6 percent, respectively.
