Just Hatched In Peterborough – Simon Bell Design

What’s your year been like?

As December gets closer I’m starting to take stock of what has been the hardest and at the same time, the most rewarding year of my life.
At the beginning of this year and after just getting my foot ‘on the housing ladder’ in England, my hours were cut in half at the company I was working for to part-time. This was not due to the recession but a massive error by senior management and it saw myself taking the biggest hit in terms of finances out of all the staff.

That was in January 2010. In February I started to work on my own company designing a brand identity and website. I put the word out via social networking sites and via word of mouth and in May 2010 I started my own company – Simon Bell Design which provides graphic design in Peterborough. The aim of the business is to offer the best possible graphic design in the Peterborough area for the best possible price.

It’s very difficult to get work when you start a business and harder in this kind of financial climate when everyone seems to want to stop advertising and everyone is running scared yet new businesses come about through job losses and these are the seeds of the future beginning to grow. Some will die, some just won’t grow that well but some will flourish. I have been lucky that I have managed to find enough work to survive which in itself is a good thing. I have managed to get a website up but now I’m seriously going to invest money in an upgrade as I know this will enhance my business profile by enabling me to showcase the projects I’ve worked on in the past 6 months. I’ll also be stepping up my SEO to reach a wider market.

It’s great to have been involved with projects throughout the year and seeing the results that my work has created. My clients have enjoyed a real return from there design investment with me even in these hard times which is great and proves that good design and advertising in bad times is more that a simple brand awareness exercise.

I’ve produced work in all kinds of areas; website design, magazine publishing, brand design, vehicle livery, press / magazine adverts and more besides. Its been really vairied which is great. Some of the work has been very demanding working to tight deadlines but it’s all good! There are quite alot of graphic designers in Peterborough but I’ve found that if you’re offering the right level of creative work for the right price then things should work out okay.

With just under a month to go before 2011, I’m really looking forward to publishing my new website in time for January and hopefully, continuing what I’ve started and doing well in the new year as I’m sure everyone else is.

It’s hard work but it’s rewarding and it’s what we do…
