China Telecom Buys 5M Customized CDMA Handsets

China Telecom has purchased 5 million customized CDMA handsets from telecom equipment providers including Samsung, ZTE, Hisense and Amoi. China Telecom purchased 1 million phones from Samsung, 900,000 from ZTE, 500,000 from Hisense and 20,000 smart phones -- with a market price of RMB 3,000 -- from Amoi. LG and China Wireless Technologies Limited subsidiary Yulong Computer Communication Technology also won CDMA phone contracts from the telecom operator.

MIIT: Telecom Industry Revenue Reaches RMB 468B

China's telecom industry revenue grew 9.1% year-on-year to reach RMB 467.81 billion in the first seven months of 2008, according to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) data released on Tuesday. China added 61.07 million mobile phone users in the first seven months to record 608.38 million total users, with sent SMS messages up 22.4% annually to 401.89 billion. China lost 10.58 million fixed-line users in the same period bringing fixed line totals to 355.06 million.

China Unicom Doubles Profit To RMB 4.4B In H1

China Unicom booked total revenue of RMB 35.14 billion, up 4% year-on-year, with GSM revenue of RMB 32.50 billion for the first half of 2008. Total profit was RMB 4.42 billion, compared to RMB 2.1 billion in the year-ago period. Aside from increasing GSM investments, Unicom will focus on mobile business development, with particular emphasis on GPRS value-added services, during the second half of this year, according to company chairman and CEO Chang Xiaobing.

Unicom had 127.60 million GSM business subscribers and 43.17 million CDMA subscribers by the end of the period and 128.551 million GSM users and 43.169 million CDMA users by the end of July.

China Mobile Releases Web 2.0 Platform

China Mobile recently released a Web 2.0 handset platform with 10GB of online storage per user at mSpaces.net. The product allows registered Nokia and Motorola handset users to transfer and upload photos and documents, including blogs and contacts, and send free web-based SMS and MMS using the platform. The homepage also lets users add widgets and RSS feeds to their accounts, said the report. China Mobile has held the domain name since April 16, 2006.
