Telecom To Spend RMB 5B On Equipment, Seeks Nokia’s Advice

China Telecom plans to spend RMB 5 billion on a new round of CDMA network construction bidding for approximately 30,000 base stations for 219 local networks nationwide in late 2008 or early 2009. China Telecom granted Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, Nortel Networks and ZTE 30%, 20%, 18%, 17% and 15%, respectively, of contracts in its first round of CDMA bidding for 81 city networks.

China Telecom to Debut CDMA Mobile Phones in October

China Telecom, the to-be-operator of CDMA network, is scheduled to launch CDMA mobile phones in October 2008.

China Telecom, which is encouraged to take over the CDMA network from China Unicom, informed its plan to purchase CDMA mobile phones to device makers earlier in June. It is now busy working out new CDMA customizing standards to ensure an abundant supply of CDMA mobile phones at lower prices.

The CDMA mobile phones will be procured by China Telecom's newly established terminal customizing unit.

In a bid to expand the CDMA business, China Telecom previously revealed its plans to set up four new departments, namely individual user division, mobile service division, wireless network optimizing center and terminal customizing unit. Furthermore, it set a target to expand the number of its CDMA subscribers to 100 million in 2009.

China Mobile Exceeds 50,000 TD-SCDMA Users

China Mobile had over 50,000 TD-SCDMA users as of July 1, including over 8,000 trial users. Fifteen thousand of those users are Olympic volunteers with terminals donated by China Mobile and Samsung, while over 20,000 are users that the mobile operator has provided with free phones and mobile fee subsidies.

China Mobile intends to give away a total of RMB 100 million in service subsidies to TD-SCDMA subscribers signing up on and after June 1. In other promotions and services, China Mobile has agreed to refund August TD-SCDMA fees in September, and begin renting TD-SCDMA terminals for RMB 10 per day plus a deposit equal to the price of the handset on October 1.

Selon un Analyst: 1M illegal iPhones on China Mobile Network

Around 1 million iPhones have been illegally unlocked and brought into China to work on China Mobile's network, a telecoms analyst told China's Interfax news agency this week. Kevin Li, an analyst with In-Stat China, says the number of unlocked iPhones potentially in use in China has more than doubled in the last six months (from around 400,000 in December 2007), a figure that does not include iPhones adapted to work on rival mobile network China Unicom. According to official statistics, Apple had shipped 5.4 million iPhones globally by the end of first-quarter 2008, which means the 1 million illegal China Mobile devices could account for a sizable proportion of all iPhones in circulation. Negotiations between China Mobile and Apple over an official launch of the iPhone reportedly broke down over Apple's insistence on securing a portion of China Mobile's iPhone revenue. While Apple has abandoned this model for the launch of the new 3G version of the device, there are still no official Chinese launch plans. "With so many iPhone owners already using China Mobile's services and driving up data traffic, China Mobile is probably in no rush to officially introduce the iPhone in China," Li said.
