China Mobile Renting Out TD-SCDMA Handsets

China Mobile released a TD-SCDMA handset rental service on August 1 in the ten cities where it is conducting first-round TD-SCDMA trial operation, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Qingdao. Rental fees, not including mobile service fees, are RMB 10 per day plus a deposit equal to the handset price. Users can rent and return handsets in any of the ten trial cities interchangeably, excepting Qingdao; handsets rented in Qingdao can only be returned to Qingdao or one specified Beijing business hall. China Mobile subsidiary Beijing Mobile is currently offering the service in 21 business halls. The mobile operator was originally expected to release the rental service on October 1.

CCTV.com Heads Up Olympic Copyright Squad

China Central TV's (CCTV) CCTV.com partnered with nine companies including Sohu, Sina, NetEase, Tencent, Ku6.com and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) to establish an "Olympic Copyright Protection Squad" on August 5. During the Olympics, the partners plan to establish a hotline to report copyright violations and designate space on their sites to announce copyright violators and their punishments.
CCTV.com sued Shenzhen-based download accelerator and peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software company Xunlei (Thunder) for copyright infringement in Shanghai's Second Intermediate Court on August 4. Xunlei broadcast CCTV footage of the Olympics torch relay and Spring Festival Gala without permission. CCTV.com general manager Wang Wenbin said that the lawsuit is a warning to prevent similar violations during the Olympics. CCTV.com began collecting video evidence for the lawsuit in early 2008.

China Mobile Begins Second-Round TD-SCDMA Construction

China Mobile has started the second round of TD-SCDMA network construction in select provincial capitals with Changsha, Hunan having already entered the base station testing stage. China Mobile is expected to increase nationwide TD-SCDMA base stations from 14,688 to 18,000 in late 2008. The mobile operator intends to invest over RMB 30 billion on second-round construction, and the second-round construction would be completed in early 2009.

Sohu, Tencent Push Olympic Content

Sohu added new Olympic features to its portal on Friday. Just under the Sogou search bar centered on Sohu's homepage, Sohu has inserted a bar with scrolling Olympic news headlines, a countdown to the opening of the games, and links to other Olympic channel (2008.sohu.com) content including photos and event schedules and introductions. The updated homepage also includes a small section for information on Chinese athletes, while Sohu's real estate, finance and IT channels contain new content inserts integrating the aforementioned Olympic content with interviews of Olympic medalists.

Tencent search engine Soso.com has adopted a new athletic logo and officially released its Olympics channel at 2008.soso.com on July 29. The new channel lists Olympic news, question and answers, and statistics on Olympic medals and athletes. Search results for Olympic venues are topped off with a three-tab section for venue introduction, related news and real-time traffic maps. The traffic maps highlight roads with green, yellow and red lines to indicate travel conditions.

Baidu added Olympic content to its news and popular search list (top.baidu.com) channels on August 1. The news platform now includes an Olympic tab that integrates news highlights and commentary, while the lists channel has added an Olympics section that offers top ten search keyword rankings for Olympic phrases, songs and athletes.

MIIT: IT Revenue Hits RMB 2.66T In H1

China's electronic information industry revenue grew 21.9% year-on-year to RMB 2.66 trillion in the first six months of 2008, according to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) statistics released on Monday. Revenue from China's manufacturing industry totaled RMB 2.31 trillion for an increase of 20.7% year-on-year during the period.
Revenue from China's software industry was up 30.4% year-on-year to RMB 345.7 billion in the first half.

Approximately 295.23 million handsets were sold in the period, up 9.7% from the first half of last year, while nationwide LCD TV production increased 65.8% annually to 10.31 million units.
