DesignBay, a design website created by a 25-year-old entrepreneur, has created a competition to design a new logo for the New South Wales Government. If you win, you will walk away with $1000. The logo that wins the competition will be donated to amateurs.
The competition was created after Nathan Rees payed $5000 for a new logo for the government. The logo that took 18 months to develop, faced quite alot of criticism very quickly after the launch. It faced this because the logo was meant to be designed around a Waratah flower, the emblem of the state. However, a number of flower experts have said that the design looks like the national flower of India, the Lotus flower.
The competition is going to be up for 30 days and it’s already collected over a hundred competition entries. Even thoguh the competition only offers $1000, a fifth of the amount payed for Nathan Rees’ logo, the 1400 designers on the site are more than pleased with the $1000 prize.
The owner of the website said this: “We’ve opened it up to our community of 1400 creative designers from around the world and the Australian public in general. We want to demonstrate that running an open design contest for these sorts of things can get you a better result; something that everyone likes. The government stuffed theirs up.”.
The 25 year old entrepreneur said that with a logo that represents something important, you cant rely on individual perspectives.. For this reason, once the competition is closed, the public will be able to vote for which logo they think suites the state the best. The design will then be donated to the government and Nathan Rees, where it will then hopefully be uased on everything from stationary design to website design.
